A family is invited to spend an entire weekend at a lonely house in the countryside, but as the weekend progresses, they realize that there is a dark side within the family that invited them. Blumhouse Productions has been a major force in the horror genre since 2007’s Paranormal Activity became a worldwide sensation. See how IMDb users rank every Blumhouse horror movie since 2007. The story is inspired by the experiences of Christian Tafdrup, director of the Danish original Speak No Evil (2022), who had befriended a Dutch couple while on vacation in Tuscany with his wife. Although the Dutch people were a bit socially awkward, both couples got along very well, and after returning home, Tafdrup received an invitation from the Dutch family to come to the Netherlands. He briefly considered it, but decided that it would feel weird staying with people he didn’t really know – he decided to stay with them for a while. Her story for the film came about when she gave free rein to her darkest fantasies about what might have happened, had she agreed (while maintaining that the original Dutch couple had never given off bad vibes). Finally, a win for Blumhouse after a year of middling films and utter flops. Who would have thought that the studio’s salvation would be an American remake of a film that’s barely two years old and already 80% in English? But here we are. The key difference? This version is infinitely better, less frustrating, and, dare I say, actually satisfying. James McAvoy: what a genius. Honestly, put this guy in every horror movie from now on, especially if he’s the villain. He’s so good at it you can almost hear him whisper, “Watch me steal every damn scene.” And of course he does. Every time. Speak No Evil is easily one of the best horror movies of the year, in my opinion. The biggest improvement? Characters who actually deserve to be rooted for. Well, okay, they’re a little dumb in the first third, but at least they get smart before you lose all hope except for one particular individual. Blumhouse, take a bow: you’ve finally done something right! The final season of “What We Do in the Shadows” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
